Representative Rick Tillis Announces Funding To Restore Historic Henry Horton State Park Facilities

(NASHVILLE) — Friday, State Representative Rick Tillis (R-Lewisburg) announced a $10 million budget appropriation from the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation (TDEC) that will restore the historic facilities at Henry Horton State Park.

The funding is part of the fiscally conservative $37 billion balanced budget that was passed by the Tennessee General Assembly earlier this week. The monies will be used to build a new visitor’s center and restaurant, renovate the Inn at Henry Horton State Park and also restore the Willhoite Mill.

Henry Horton State Park was constructed in the 1960s on the estate of former Tennessee Governor Henry Horton. It is located on the shores of the historic Duck River, one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Remnants of the mill and bridge operated and used by the family of Horton’s spouse for more than a century can still be seen today on the Wilhoite Mill Trail.

“I’m pleased that Governor Haslam is making this investment in the facilities at Henry Horton as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of our state parks,” said Representative Tillis. “Tennesseans have enjoyed the majesty of this park for more than 50 years. This critical funding secures its legacy and guarantees that future generations will be able to enjoy it.”

The Henry Horton projects still need approval from the State Building Commission (SBC). However, the design phase of the improvements could begin as early as this fall. The projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Rick Tillis is a member of the House Business & Utilities Committee, as well as the House Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee and Subcommittee. Tillis lives in Lewisburg and represents House District 92, which includes Marshall County, as well as parts of Franklin, Lincoln and Marion Counties.
