Assistant Majority Leader Ron Gant Discusses Inauguration, West Tennessee’s Economic Development

The words “Believe In Tennessee” were a prominent part of Bill Lee’s campaign to become our next governor. As we gathered for his inaugural ceremony over the weekend, the crowd of more than 1,600 citizens who witnessed this historic event could not miss their visibility as they were notably displayed on the wall behind the inaugural stage.

As I listened to our new governor speak about Tennessee’s many achievements under Bill Haslam, I also heard the words of a man who deeply believes in and is strongly committed to the prosperity of all Tennessee communities, not just those currently experiencing remarkable success.

Many cities and towns across our state have “good jobs and great prosperity,” as well as “companies moving here and starting here.” However, Governor Lee reminded us about some of the unique challenges remaining, specifically, the 15 Tennessee counties in poverty — “all rural, all Tennesseans.”

I know Governor Lee is focused on partnering with me and our General Assembly in efforts to change their economic trajectory. He believes these communities can be successful, and a big key to ensuring this outcome was another focus of his inaugural speech — education. While our students are the fastest improving in the entire nation across math, reading, and science, Tennessee still ranks in the bottom half of all states.

I agree with our governor when he says education is about “more than just a test score.” We must prepare Tennessee’s future leaders for success throughout life. As Governor Lee stated, this includes a focus on technical, vocational, and work-based learning opportunities, agricultural, as well as character education and the inclusion of civics. These combined with additional reforms will take our education system to new heights, attract new employers to Tennessee, prepare our citizens to secure the quality jobs they desire, and excel at all levels of their careers.

I am excited about District 94’s and our state’s future under Governor Lee. As Assistant Majority Leader, I am eager to work with him and my colleagues to create innovative solutions that begin addressing these important issues throughout the 111th General Assembly. Together, I know we will level the playing field for rural West Tennessee and sustain our state’s economic success in the years ahead.

Please continue to pray for us in the days and weeks ahead. May God bless all of you, and this great state!
