Beginning The Conversation; Assistant Majority Leader Gant Meets With West Tennessee House Republicans On Megasite

Now that Governor Bill Lee has officially been sworn in as Tennessee’s new leader, it is time to begin the process of moving our state from good to great. In the days ahead, I will be meeting with Governor Lee and members of House leadership to determine our legislative priorities for the 2019 session.

A major part of those discussions will center on the unique needs of the citizens of our community and all of West Tennessee. Recently, I met with several of my House Republican colleagues from our region to discuss some of the challenges facing our communities.

Rural economic development was a major focus of this conversation — particularly the Memphis Regional Megasite. Those who attended our meeting received an update on the megasite from the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development (TNECD).

In their remarks, TNECD informed us the site is closer to becoming shovel ready, and that it can be prepared for construction within 18 months of securing a tenant. Additionally, we learned that site workers are closer to overcoming the biggest environmental hurdle that still remains — the completion of the wastewater pipeline. The Department also discussed efforts to attract an employer to the site, with a focus on securing an original equipment manufacturer. ECD made it clear to all in the room they will not be asking for more state funding for the site as part of this year’s budget.

West Tennessee House Republicans understand the completion of the megasite is long overdue and we agree it must remain a top priority. Upon its completion, we know the site has the potential to transform the trajectory of our local economies in cities and towns across our region.

I am eager to participate in additional discussions related to this important issue throughout the 111th General Assembly. Together, our work will allow West Tennessee to build upon some of our recent economic momentum, while also ensuring our hometown communities have the opportunity to thrive in the years ahead.

Ron Gant serves as Assistant Majority Leader for the Tennessee House of Representatives.
