(NASHVILLE) — State Representative Ron Travis (R-Dayton) today congratulated the leaders of two area schools — Scott Calahan of Harriman High School and Griffith Elementary School’s William Childers — on their selections to serve as part of the inaugural class of the Tennessee Rural Principals Network.
This professional network that includes 52 rural principals from across Tennessee is part of the governor’s Transforming School Leadership Initiative — designed to improve preparation, retention, and development of the state’s principals.
The Tennessee Rural Principals Network recognizes the importance of providing a sustained opportunity for our rural school leaders by affording them the ability to participate in:
- Ongoing professional learning from state and national experts on evidence-based strategies that improve educator effectiveness and student outcomes in a rural setting;
- Opportunities to exchange ideas, strategies, resources, and common challenges with peers in a safe and supportive setting;
- Opportunities to work with a smaller group of peers in a community of practice focused on a common challenge to identify best practices currently in use and to reduce isolation.
Calahan, Griffith, and additional members of the Tennessee Rural Principals Network will receive funding to help them attend a series of five state-led conferences, training opportunities, and other events during the current school year which will help them better address some of the unique challenges they face as leaders of rural school communities.
“I am pleased that Scott and William will benefit from the unique training and professional development opportunities provided to them through the Tennessee Rural Principals Network,” said Representative Travis. “These valuable resources might not otherwise be available to our participants because of the high costs associated with them. I am hopeful this network will benefit more of our rural school communities and their leaders in the years ahead.”
