State Rep. Brock Martin, R-Huntingdon, is encouraging Tennesseans to take advantage of the state’s annual sales tax holiday weekend from Friday, July 25 through Sunday, July 27.
The event allows shoppers to buy qualifying clothing, school supplies and computers without paying sales tax. The exemption applies to in-store and online purchases for personal use.
“Tax free weekend is a practical way for families to stretch their budgets while getting ready for the school year,” Martin said. “It’s one more example of how Tennessee is working to ease financial burdens and support parents, students and educators.”
Eligible items include:
- General clothing priced at $100 or less per item, including shirts, pants, shoes and dresses
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item, such as notebooks, backpacks, crayons and pencils
- Computers, laptops and tablets for personal use priced at $1,500 or less
The tax exemption does not apply to items intended for business or resale. A full list of qualifying and non-qualifying items is available at the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee remains one of the lowest-taxed states in the nation and does not collect a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican supermajority in the General Assembly has delivered more than $5.1 billion in tax relief to residents.
