State Rep. Jeff Burkhart, R-Clarksville, is encouraging families to take advantage of Tennessee’s annual sales tax holiday weekend, which runs from Friday, July 25 through Sunday, July 27.
The tax-free weekend allows shoppers to purchase qualifying clothing, school supplies and computers without paying sales tax. The exemption also applies to eligible online purchases, as long as the items are for personal use and not for business or resale.
“This is a great opportunity for families in Montgomery County to save money on school necessities,” Burkhart said. “As students prepare to head back to the classroom this tax relief helps ease the financial strain and supports our communities.”
Qualifying tax-exempt items include:
- Clothing priced at $100 or less per item, such as shirts, pants, shoes, socks, dresses, etc.
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item, such as backpacks, binders, crayons, pencils, etc.
- Computers, laptops and tablets for personal use priced at $1,500 or less
For a complete list of eligible and non-eligible items, visit the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee remains one of the lowest-taxed states in the nation and does not collect a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican supermajority in the General Assembly has delivered more than $5.1 billion in tax relief to residents.
