State Rep. Paul Sherrell, R-Sparta, is encouraging residents to take advantage of Tennessee’s back-to-school sales tax holiday happening July 25–27, which offers families valuable savings on school essentials.
The three-day event allows shoppers to buy clothing, school supplies and personal-use computers without paying state sales tax. The exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases, as long as the items meet the state’s eligibility guidelines.
“This tax holiday gives working families a break at a time when expenses can quickly add up,” Sherrell said. “It’s a smart way to save money while getting ready for the school year.”
Tax-free items include:
- Clothing priced at $100 or less per item (including shoes, shirts, pants, socks and dresses)
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less (such as backpacks, crayons, pencils and binders)
- Computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less, for personal use
A complete list of qualifying and non-qualifying items is available on the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee continues to rank among the nation’s lowest-taxed states and does not collect a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican-led General Assembly has delivered more than $5.1 billion in tax relief to Tennesseans.
