State Rep. Tom Leatherwood, R-Arlington, is urging Tennessee families to take advantage of the state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, which runs July 25–27.
The three-day tax break allows shoppers to purchase qualifying school-related items without paying state sales tax.
“This is a smart way for parents to save money on essential school supplies,” Leatherwood said. “Whether you’re buying clothes, classroom materials or technology, every dollar saved can make a difference.”
The tax exemption applies to the following items:
- Clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item, including pants, shirts, shoes, socks and dresses
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item, such as notebooks, backpacks, crayons and calculators
- Personal-use computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less
Both in-store and online purchases qualify if the items meet the state’s eligibility criteria. A complete list of tax-exempt items is available on the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee remains one of the lowest-taxed states in the country and does not levy a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican-led General Assembly has enacted more than $5.1 billion in tax cuts.
