State Rep. Greg Martin, R-Hixson, is encouraging Tennessee families to take advantage of the state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday from July 25–27.
The three-day event exempts certain school-related items from state sales tax, helping families save money as they prepare for the upcoming school year.
“This is a smart way for parents to reduce expenses on back-to-school essentials,” Martin said. “Whether it’s notebooks, shoes or laptops, this tax holiday gives families the opportunity to stretch their budgets.”
Shoppers can buy qualifying items in stores and online without paying sales tax. Eligible items include:
- Clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item, including shirts, pants, dresses and shoes
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item, such as backpacks, calculators and crayons
- Personal-use computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less
A complete list of tax-exempt items is available on the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee remains one of the most tax-friendly states in the nation, with no personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican-led General Assembly has approved more than $5.1 billion in tax cuts.
