– State Rep. Kevin Vaughan, R-Collierville, is urging Tennessee families to take advantage of the state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, scheduled for July 25–27.
The three-day tax break allows shoppers to buy qualifying school-related items without paying state sales tax, providing financial relief ahead of the upcoming school year.
“This is a great way for families to save on essential school supplies,” Vaughan said. “From clothing and backpacks to laptops and notebooks, this weekend helps parents stretch their budgets during the back-to-school season.”
Tax-free items include:
- Clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item, such as shirts, pants, shoes and dresses
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item, including backpacks, calculators and crayons
- Personal-use computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less
The exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases that meet the state’s eligibility criteria. A full list of qualifying items is available on the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee remains one of the lowest-taxed states in the nation and does not collect a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican-led General Assembly has approved more than $5.1 billion in tax cuts.
