NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Iris Rudder, R-Winchester, announced $175,000 in state funding was awarded to the City of Whitwell and the Town of Decherd.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will administer the funding through two separate programs: Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) and Tennessee Recreation Initiative Program (TRIP). Both were approved by the General Assembly in the 2025-26 state budget.
“From park improvements in Whitwell to helping Decherd launch a new department, these investments will support healthier, more connected communities,” Rudder said. “I’m grateful to TDEC for their support and proud of our local leaders for their continued commitment to improving the quality of life for residents.”
The City of Whitwell was awarded $125,000 through the LPRF to make improvements at Whitwell City Park. City leaders plan to use the funding to resurface the tennis courts, make seating upgrades, as well as update the basketball court with new goals and fences.
The Town of Decherd was awarded $50,000 through the TRIP to help establish a Parks and Recreation Department and to hire a department director.
The LPRF provides state funding to match local government investments for recreation projects and the purchase of land for parks, natural areas, greenways and recreational facilities.
The TRIP program provides state funding to help cities and counties establish parks and recreation departments.
