State Rep. Charlie Baum, R-Murfreesboro, has been appointed by House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, to serve as chairman of the House Higher Education Subcommittee for the 114th General Assembly.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Charlie Baum, R-Murfreesboro, has been appointed by House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, to serve as chairman of the House Higher Education Subcommittee for the 114th General Assembly.
Baum has spent more than 25 years in higher education as an economics professor at Middle Tennessee State University. He has served in the Tennessee House of Representatives since in 2018. This will be his first year chairing the Higher Education Subcommittee.
“I’m honored to be selected to chair the Higher Education Subcommittee and grateful to Speaker Sexton for placing his confidence in me,” Baum said. “This committee tackles critical issues for both educators and students at our state’s higher education institutions. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to make a meaningful impact on Tennessee’s education system.”
The six-member Higher Education Subcommittee is an arm of the House Education Committee and deals with legislation relating to post-secondary education.
“Representative Charlie Baum has a strong commitment to advancing higher education opportunities for Tennesseans,” said Sexton. “As chairman of the Higher Education Subcommittee, Charlie’s leadership will be instrumental in shaping policies that support students and strengthen our higher learning institutions.”
Baum has served as a member of the Higher Education Subcommittee since 2021. Most recently, he served as vice-chairman of the Finance, Ways and Means Committee during the 113th General Assembly.
Along with his chairmanship, he will serve on the Education Committee and Finance, Ways and Means Committee.
Charlie Baum represents District 37 which includes part of Rutherford County.
