NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Aron Maberry, R-Clarksville, spearheaded passage of his first bill in the Tennessee House of Representatives on Feb. 27.
House Bill 187 updates the reporting requirements for the Comptroller of the Treasury regarding the Tennessee Literacy Success Act to provide a broader review of the program over time.
“It was a true honor to pass my first piece of legislation in the 114th Tennessee General Assembly,” Maberry said. “I’m grateful for the chance to work alongside the Comptroller’s Office on this bill, and proud to have earned unanimous support from my colleagues in the House.”
The bill changes the frequency of reports from every year to every three years. This allows the Office of Research and Education Accountability (OREA) to conduct a more thorough analysis of the Literacy Success Act and foundational literacy skills plans to show trends year-over-year.
OREA will also be able to identify districts where students’ reading proficiencies have improved and determine which interventions are making the biggest impact on student’s ability to read proficiently.
Annual data will still be made available by the Tennessee Department of Education for the General Assembly and school districts. This legislation just reduces the reports complied by OREA.
The companion bill, Senate Bill 208, was approved unanimously on Feb. 24. The bill will head to Gov. Bill Lee’s desk for signature in the coming weeks.
Aron Maberry represents House District 68 which includes part of Montgomery County.
