On Monday, State Rep. Dennis Powers, R-Jacksboro, welcomed Mark Daly, Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann (Chairman of the Irish Senate), to Tennessee for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Powers presented Daly with a Tennessee state flag that had flown over the Capitol and a tristarflag tie, symbols of Tennessee’s pride and the strong ties between the state and Ireland.

“This is a proud moment for Tennessee as we continue to strengthen our relationship with Ireland,” Powers said.

Powers helped establish the Tennessee-Ireland Trade Commission in 2024 to boost bilateral trade and investment. Earlier this year, he was appointed to the commission, which focuses on infrastructure, human capital and fostering business, education and cultural exchange between the two regions.

“The Tennessee-Ireland Trade Commission is an important step in building economic and cultural partnerships that will benefit both our regions for years to come,” Powers said.

Powers also highlighted House Joint Resolution 240, passed by the Tennessee General Assembly on March 12, which commemorates St. Patrick’s Day. The resolution honors the historical and cultural ties between the U.S. and Ireland, recognizing the contributions of Irish immigrants to Tennessee and the nation. It also highlights the role of Irish Americans in shaping the cultural and political landscape of the U.S. and the contributions of Irish-American state legislators to strengthening these ties.

The resolution underscores the American-Irish partnership, emphasizing how shared values and historical connections have created a foundation for mutual prosperity.
