NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Renea Jones, R-Unicoi, successfully passed her first bill in the Tennessee House of Representatives on March 6.

House Bill 185 allows small municipalities to waive the requirement that certified municipal finance officers (CMFOs) must work 16 hours per month upon approval from the Comptroller of the Treasury.

“I’m honored to pass my first bill with the support of my colleagues in both chambers,” Jones said. “House Bill 185 ensures small municipalities have this oversight they need without paying for unnecessary services. I’m grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the Comptroller’s office on this legislation and look forward to advancing my remaining bills in the coming weeks.”

Current law requires contracted CMFOs to devote a minimum of 16 hours per month of financial oversight on behalf of the municipality.

Small municipalities who have limited financial activity often do not need the 16-hour minimum, and this bill allows them to only pay for work that is needed.

This legislation impacts 14 municipalities across the state, including three in East Tennessee.

The House and Senate unanimously passed the legislation and it now heads to Gov. Bill Lee’s desk for his signature.

Renea Jones represents District 4 which includes Unicoi and part of Carter Counties.
