NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Lowell Russell, R-Vonore, is encouraging eligible local nonprofit organizations to apply for the Families First Community Grant Program.
This program will administer approximately $27 million in funding to nonprofit organizations across Tennessee dedicated to strengthening families and supporting self-sufficiency.
“This initiative directly invests in local organizations that understand our community’s unique needs and are committed to creating lasting change,” Russell said. “I urge every eligible organization to apply for this opportunity. By working together, we can strengthen our foundation and empower families for generations to come.”
Families First, the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, is a workforce development and employment program. The Families First program emphasizes work, training and personal responsibility. The program helps participants reach this goal by providing temporary cash assistance, childcare assistance, educational supports and other services.
The grant program was created as an additional method to invest TANF funds in a way to help low-income families overcome barriers and help them move toward sustainable economic stability.
Grants will support a wide range of services in the areas of education, health and well-being, economic stability and fostering safe, stable and nurturing relationships.
Recipients will be selected through a competitive application process and evaluated based upon their ability to provide effective services and programs that address the specific needs of the community. Awards are administered by the Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS).
Eligible nonprofits include those who play a key role in the design and implementation of programs that foster at least one of the federal TANF goals such as helping parents provide for their children, job preparation and finding employment.

Lowell Russell represents District 21 which includes part of Loudon and Monroe Counties.
