State Rep. Dennis Powers, R-Jacksboro, is reminding residents Tennessee’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday returns July 25–27, offering families a chance to save on essential items.
The three-day tax break allows shoppers to purchase clothing, school supplies and personal-use computers without paying state sales tax. The exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases, provided the items meet eligibility requirements.
“Supporting Tennessee families as they prepare for a new school year is a priority,” Powers said. “This tax holiday puts money back in their pockets when they need it most.”
Tax-free items include:
- Clothing priced at $100 or less per item (including shoes, shirts, pants, socks and dresses)
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less (such as backpacks, crayons, pencils and binders)
- Computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less, for personal use
A complete list of qualifying and non-qualifying items is available on the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee ranks among the nation’s lowest-taxed states and does not collect a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican-led General Assembly has passed more than $5.1 billion in tax relief for Tennesseans.
