State Rep. John Gillespie, R-Memphis, is urging Tennessee families to take advantage of the state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, set for July 25–27.

The three-day event allows shoppers to purchase certain school-related items without paying state sales tax. The exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases.

“This tax holiday gives families a practical way to cut costs as they get ready for the new school year,” Gillespie said. “It’s a great opportunity to save on essentials like supplies, clothes and technology.”

Eligible tax-exempt items include:

  • Clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item, such as shirts, pants, dresses and shoes
  • School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item, including backpacks, calculators and crayons
  • Personal-use computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less

The Tennessee Department of Revenue offers a full list of qualifying items on its website.

Tennessee continues to rank among the most tax-friendly states, with no personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican supermajority in the General Assembly has passed more than $5.1 billion in tax relief.
