State Rep. Sabi “Doc” Kumar, R-Springfield, is encouraging Tennessee families to take advantage of the state’s annual sales tax holiday, which begins Friday, July 25 and runs through Sunday, July 27.
During the tax-free weekend, shoppers can purchase select clothing, school supplies and computers without paying sales tax. The exemption also applies to qualifying online purchases, provided items are intended for personal use and not for business or resale.
“This tax break gives hardworking families an opportunity to save money on essential back-to-school items,” Kumar said. “I’m proud to support common-sense policies that provide real relief while helping Tennessee remain one of the most fiscally responsible states in the country.”
Tax-exempt items include:
- General apparel priced at $100 or less per item (such as shirts, pants, shoes and dresses)
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less per item (including backpacks, binders, crayons and pencils)
- Personal-use computers, including laptops and tablets, priced at $1,500 or less
For a full list of qualifying items, visit the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee remains one of the lowest-taxed states in the nation and does not levy a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican-led General Assembly has delivered more than $5.1 billion in tax relief to Tennesseans.
