State Rep. Jody Barrett, R-Dickson, commended the Elephant Sanctuary for winning the 2025 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award in the sustainable performance category.
Located in Hohenwald, the nonprofit is recognized worldwide as a safe haven for captive elephants and has expanded its mission to lead in sustainability. It has cut landfill waste by more than 98% through extensive composting and recycling programs. The sanctuary uses solar panels to supply 25% of its electricity and harvests more than 90% of its water from rain.
“The Elephant Sanctuary continues to set the standard not only in animal care but also in environmental responsibility,” Barrett said. “This recognition highlights the remarkable work being done right here in our community to preserve natural resources and promote sustainability.”
The award is one of nine presented annually by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
The Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards program has recognized individuals and organizations for environmental leadership for more than 35 years.
