State Rep. John Gillespie, R-Memphis, today announced arts organizations in Shelby County will receive a combined $452,360 in state grants to support education and outreach initiatives.
The funding, awarded by the Tennessee Arts Commission, will benefit 10 local organizations:
- ARTSmemphis: $91,360
- ArtWorks Foundation: $10,440
- Blues City Cultural Center: $45,290
- Buckman Performing Arts Center at St. Mary’s School: $9,790
- Creative Aging Memphis: $71,760
- PRIZM Ensemble: $22,310
- Pyramid Music Program (Memphis Youth Symphony Program): $33,490
- Tennessee Shakespeare Company: $62,260
- Theatre Memphis: $105,660
“These grants are a great investment in the creative spirit of Memphis,” Gillespie said. “Our arts organizations enrich lives, strengthen neighborhoods and create opportunities for residents of all ages.”
The commission selects grant recipients through a competitive process, with applications reviewed by citizen advisory panels with expertise in various arts disciplines. The full commission gives final approval.
“Tennessee is fortunate to be a state where few can rival the breadth and depth of its arts and culture,” said Anne B. Pope, executive director of the Tennessee Arts Commission. “Arts and culture are vital tools for attracting and retaining businesses and help build stronger communities by enhancing the distinctive character of Tennessee places.”
Tennessee’s nonprofit arts and culture sector generates $1.4 billion in annual economic activity and supports more than 23,400 full-time jobs. It also plays a critical role in education, tourism and community development.
