State Rep. John Crawford, Bristol/Kingsport, today announced Slater Community Center will receive a $30,000 state grant to expand programming, improve facilities and strengthen services for older adults.

The funding is part of a $5 million initiative administered by the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging (DDA) to support 125 senior centers statewide. The grants were approved in the 2025–26 state budget, which includes a $42.5 million allocation to enhance emergency and community services for Tennessee’s aging population.

“Slater Community Center is an important gathering place that enriches the lives of older adults in our region,” Crawford said. “This investment will strengthen their ability to offer valuable services and ensure seniors have opportunities to stay active, engaged and connected.”

Through the DDA’s competitive grant program, centers receive between $10,000 and $50,000. Funds may be used for building improvements, equipment, programming, activities, marketing and other operational expenses, excluding staff salaries.
