State Rep. John Gillespie, R-Memphis, today announced the Lucille McWherter Senior Center in Memphis will receive a $40,000 state grant to expand programming, upgrade facilities and support routine operating expenses for older adults in the community.

The Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging (DDA) administers the funding as part of a $5 million initiative supporting 125 senior centers statewide. The grants were approved in the 2025-26 state budget, which also includes $42.5 million to strengthen emergency and community services for Tennessee’s aging population.

“Programs that keep seniors active and connected make a real difference in their health and happiness,” Gillespie said. “This funding supports that mission and helps ensure older adults in Memphis have a place to learn, socialize and thrive.”

Senior centers receive between $10,000 and $50,000 through the DDA’s competitive grant program. Funds may be used for building improvements, equipment, marketing, programming, activities and other operational costs, excluding staff salaries.
