Assistant House Majority Leader Mark Cochran, R-Englewood, and State Sen. Adam Lowe, R-Calhoun, announced $100,000 in grant funding was awarded to the City of Etowah to support renovations and updates at the Gem Theater.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Assistant House Majority Leader Mark Cochran, R-Englewood, and State Sen. Adam Lowe, R-Calhoun, announced $100,000 in grant funding was awarded to the City of Etowah to support renovations and updates at the Gem Theater.

The funding was awarded through the Tourism Enhancement Grant program administered by the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development (TDTD).

“Tourism plays a vital role in Tennessee’s economy and this grant will help Etowah continue improving spaces that draw visitors to our community,” Cochran said. “The Gem Theater has brought people together for more than a century, and we’re fortunate to have city leaders who prioritize preserving its rich history. Thank you to TDTD for supporting our community and I look forward to seeing the new updates soon.”

Eligible projects include improvements to stages, signage, historic preservation, ADA accessibility and other upgrades to local attractions and venues.

“The Gem Theater is an important part of Etowah’s history and local economy,” said Lowe. “This grant will help preserve a cherished landmark and strengthen tourism in our community. I appreciate TDTD’s support and the city’s commitment to this project.”

The historic Gem Theater, originally built in 1906 and transformed into a show house in 1918, quickly became a cornerstone of the community and one of the region’s most popular family-friendly entertainment venues, according to the city’s website.

Now, it is home to the Gem Players who put on theater productions and concerts for the community.
