State Rep. Jay Reedy, R-Erin, announced $419,247 in grant funding has been awarded to Benton County for emergency communications upgrades.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Jay Reedy, R-Erin, announced $419,247 in grant funding has been awarded to Benton County for emergency communications upgrades.

The funds are from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, administered by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD), which aims to assist communities with water and sewer improvements along with health and safety projects.

“Benton County dispatchers and first responders serve more than 16,000 residents so it’s essential that they have the equipment they need to do their jobs effectively,” Reedy said. “This grant will help county leaders make these upgrades and strengthen public safety efforts throughout the community. Thank you to everyone at TNECD for their continued support.”

County officials will use the funds to purchase microwave links, repeaters and mobile and hand-held radios.

This year, 44 communities across the state received CDBG funding totaling $26.2 million, according to TNECD.

Funds are available for water and sewer improvements, health and safety projects and other community improvements. In addition to traditional community improvement and safety projects, such as sidewalk and walking trail improvements, street paving and community centers.
