NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Mark Cochran, R-Englewood, and State Sen. Adam Lowe, R-Calhoun, today announced $490,000 in funding for the Calhoun Blueway Enhancement and Trail project along the Hiwassee River.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will administer the grants through the Recreational Trails Program (RTP), which provides funds for trail land acquisition, non-routine trail maintenance, trail rehabilitation and trailhead support facilities.
“The Hiwassee River is a big part of what makes Southeast Tennessee the most beautiful part of our state,” the lawmakers said. “This significant funding is an investment in the heritage of our community and the countless Tennesseans who will be able to enjoy this blueway for years to come. We’re grateful to the local leaders who helped secure this grant and look forward to the project’s completion.”
The funding will support construction of a parking area, walking trail, seawall, dock, kayak launch and three pavilions at the Calhoun Blueway Park. It will also be used for erosion control, landscaping and site restoration improvements.
This year, TDEC administered more than $20 million to 19 communities across Tennessee through RTP and the Local Parks and Recreation Fund to help enhance parks, natural areas and trails.
