NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Andrew Farmer, R-Sevierville, was appointed Jan. 16 by House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, to serve as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
“Representative Andrew Farmer’s work experience and dedication to the rule of law make him a solid choice to lead our newly unified judicial committee in the House,” Sexton said. “His strong leadership will keep Tennessee’s legal system efficient, and accountable to the people we serve.”
The House Judiciary Committee is responsible for state laws relating to courts, judicial proceedings, civil procedure, private and governmental civil liability and criminal law, including procedure, offenses, penalties, and sentencing. The committee will also oversee all technical revisions to Tennessee Code Annotated.
“It’s a great honor to be appointed chairman of the House Judiciary Committee,” Farmer said. “A fair and reliable judiciary is essential and we will work tirelessly during the 114th General Assembly to ensure efficiency. I thank Speaker Sexton for this incredible opportunity and I’m excited to get to work for the people of Tennessee.”
The Judiciary Committee was split into the House Criminal Justice Committee and the House Civil Justice Committee in recent General Assemblies. Farmer previously served three terms as chair of the House Civil Justice Committee and two terms as chair of the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee.
During the 114th General Assembly, he will also serve on the Health Committee, Civil Justice Subcommittee, Criminal Justice Subcommittee, Calendar and Rules Committee, and the Select Committee on Rules.
Farmer, an attorney who owns his own law practice in Sevierville, has represented House District 17 since 2013.
