NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Gary Hicks, R-Rogersville, has been appointed by House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, to serve as chairman of the House Finance, Ways and Means Committee for the 114th Tennessee General Assembly.

As chair, Hicks will guide the passage of a balanced state budget to keep Tennessee fiscally strong while building on strategic investments and Republican priorities.

“Representative Gary Hicks is an experienced and dedicated leader who has helped shape Tennessee’s fiscal policies,” Sexton said. “His appointment as finance chairman will make sure the financial health of our state remains strong and our fiscal policy stays conservative.”

The Finance, Ways and Means Committee is responsible for all measures relating to the general appropriations of state funds; the deposit of public monies; all measures relating to taxes and the raising of revenue, bonds and bonding revenue, the issuance, payment or retirement of bonds, the evidence of indebtedness; and assessment and collection of property taxes.

“It’s an incredible privilege to have been appointed chairman of this committee and I thank Speaker Sexton for his confidence in me,” Hicks said. “Ensuring we remain one of the nation’s most fiscally responsible, resilient and prosperous states will be my priority. I look forward to working with my colleagues to fulfill our constitutional duty of passing a balanced budget while efficiently delivering results for all Tennesseans.”

Hicks has represented House District 9 in the state legislature since 2015. He served three terms as chairman of the House Finance, Ways and Means Subcommittee, where he helped guide the passage of several multi-billion-dollar state budgets that strengthened Tennessee’s economy.

Hicks was a Hawkins County Commissioner, Hawkins County Budget Chairman and Hawkins County Commission Chairman Pro Tempore before being appointed to serve in the State House. He and his wife, Laura, live in Rogersville with their two children, Caroline and Maddie. He has worked for Rogersville City Schools as the Technology Director since 2010 and is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee.

Tennessee Republicans remain committed to keeping taxes low. Tennessee holds the highest bond rating issued by all three of the nation’s credit rating agencies, which reflects extreme confidence in the Volunteer State’s preparedness in meeting financial commitments in tough economic times.

The 114th General Assembly officially convened on Jan. 14 and completed its organizational meeting with the appointment of committees by Speaker Sexton.

State Rep. Gary Hicks represents House District 9, which includes Hancock and part of Claiborne and Hawkins counties.
