NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. William Slater, R-Gallatin, and State Sen. Ferrell Haile, R-Gallatin, today presented a resolution to honor Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) Trooper Adam Cothron at the State Capitol in Nashville.
On the evening of July 19, 2024, Cothron pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation on I-40 in Putnam County. As he walked to the vehicle, the driver fired through the passenger window, critically injuring him. The bullet struck near his shoulder and neck area, damaging Cothron’s nerves.
“Adam is a great American and a proud Tennessean, and I’m honored to recognize him for his dedication to serving our state,” Slater said. “Law enforcement officers do extraordinarily dangerous work every day, but none expect to experience what happened to Adam while on duty. His strength and perseverance in recovery have been an incredible inspiration to all residents of our state.”
Braze Rucker and Timothy Davis Jr. are facing charges for the senseless crime against Cothron. Both are repeat, violent offenders and have been indicted by a Putnam County Grand Jury on counts of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm with the intent to commit a dangerous felony, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
Cothron spent months recovering in a rehabilitation facility in Atlanta. He was able to finally return home to Trousdale County in the fall. It’s unclear how long it might take, but he is hoping for a full recovery and to be able to suit up and go back to work.
“We are incredibly proud to honor Trooper Adam Cothron for his courageous service to our state,” said Haile. “By the grace of God, he survived the vicious attack on his life and is now safely home with his family. Every day, our law enforcement officers risk everything to protect our communities not knowing what each day may bring. We are forever in their debt. I will continue to lift up Trooper Cothron and his family in prayer as he continues his recovery.”
House Joint Resolution 18 honors Cothron for his courage, valor, and stalwart commitment to public service.
State Rep. William Slater represents House District 35, which includes Trousdale and part of Sumner counties. State Sen. Ferrell Haile represents Senate District 18, which includes Sumner and Trousdale counties.
