NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Lowell Russell, R-Vonore, recognized National Glioblastoma Cancer Awareness Day on July 16 to honor a constituent who died from the disease and to spread awareness across Tennessee.

Russell sponsored House Joint Resolution 358 to encourage Tennesseans and dedicated organizations to raise awareness of the disease and support efforts to improve early detection, treatment options and the search for a cure.

“Glioblastoma is a relentless and often overlooked disease that shatters thousands of families every year,” Russell said. “As we come together to raise awareness, I also want to honor every life lost to this cancer. I’m proud to stand with families and advocates in the fight for a cure.”

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive and fast-growing type of brain tumor that accounts for 48% of all primary malignant brain tumors, according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).

The association lists common symptoms as persistent headaches, double or blurred vision, changes in mood and personality and the sudden onset of seizures.

Despite treatment options, the prognosis for GBM is generally challenging with a median survival time of 12-15 months following diagnosis, according to the Glioblastoma Research Organization.

House Joint Resolution 358 was signed by Gov. Bill Lee and presented to the wife of his constituent who has been tirelessly advocating for more awareness and treatment options.

Lowell Russell represents District 21 which includes part of Loudon and Monroe Counties.
