NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Lowell Russell, R-Vonore, is encouraging eligible volunteer fire departments to apply for grant awards through the state’s Volunteer Firefighter Equipment and Training Grant program.

The 114th General Assembly appropriated $20 million in the 2025-26 state budget to help cover the costs for firefighting equipment and training for volunteer fire departments.

“Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of our communities, especially in rural areas, and equipment can be a significant expense for small departments,” Russell said. “These grants help ensure our firefighters have the tools and training they need, and I hope all qualifying departments will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Eligible departments must have a valid recognition certificate from the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) and have a staff comprised of less than 51% full-time career firefighters.

Grants may be used to purchase equipment that helps contain or extinguish fires and protect firefighters, but they may not be used for fire trucks or vehicles.

Information on how to apply and other grant-related resources, visit the SFMO’s website or the links below.
