NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Kip Capley, R-Summertown, today announced $1 million in state funding to preserve historic courthouses in Lawrence and Maury counties.

The Lawrence County Courthouse and Maury County Courthouse each received $500,000 from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) through the Historic Development Grant program, which was created by the General Assembly in 2021 to protect historic buildings in the Volunteer State.

“Preserving our state’s rich history is vital to maintaining the values that make Tennessee great,” Capley said. “These substantial investments will strengthen our local communities and protect the cultural significance of the historic courthouses in Lawrence and Maury counties. I’m grateful to the local leaders who helped secure this important funding.”

Historic Development Grants help fund projects that preserve and renovate historic courthouses across Tennessee. To be eligible, courthouses must be included on the National Register of Historic Places or qualify to be listed.

More than $5 million was administered by TNECD to 11 communities across the state through the grant program.

State Rep. Kip Capley represents District 71 in the Tennessee House of Representatives, which includes Wayne and part of Hardin, Lawrence and Maury counties.
