NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Paul Sherrell, R-Sparta, is applauding a recent federal grant to fully fund the creation of the Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery in White County.
The Tennessee Department of Veterans Services received the award from the National Cemetery Administration (NCA) of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
“I’m incredibly grateful to all the men and women who have honorably served our nation in the armed forces,” said Sherrell. “The Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery will help recognize the service and sacrifice of these heroes by providing a hallowed resting space and essential funeral services. I thank the many community leaders who helped secure these vital funds.”
Administered through the NCA’s Veterans Cemetery Grant Program, the grant will fully fund the planning, development, design, and initial operations of the Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery. In 2020, the state of Tennessee purchased 127.49 acres on Country Club Road in White County for the cemetery.
More than 25,000 veterans call the Upper Cumberland region home, helping the NCA meet its goal of ensuring 95% of veterans have reasonable access to burial.
The Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery will be the sixth state-run veterans cemetery in the Volunteer State. Current locations include the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Nashville, the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Memphis, the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads, and two East Tennessee State Veterans Cemeteries in Knoxville.
