State Reps. Jerome Moon, R-Maryville, and Tom Stinnett, R-Friendsville, are encouraging residents to take advantage of Tennessee’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, set for July 25–27.
During the three-day tax break, shoppers can purchase clothing, school supplies and personal-use computers without paying state sales tax. The exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases, as long as items meet eligibility requirements.
“This sales tax holiday is a great way to help families stretch their budgets as they prepare for the upcoming school year,” Moon and Stinnett said in a joint statement. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of the savings.”
Tax-free items include:
- Clothing priced at $100 or less per item (including shoes, shirts, pants, socks and dresses)
- School and art supplies priced at $100 or less (such as backpacks, crayons, pencils and binders)
- Computers, laptops and tablets priced at $1,500 or less, for personal use
A full list of qualifying and non-qualifying items is available on the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.
Tennessee remains one of the lowest-taxed states in the nation and does not collect a personal income tax. Since 2012, the Republican-led General Assembly has approved more than $5.1 billion in tax relief for Tennesseans.
