(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — House Commerce Committee Chairman Timothy Hill (R-Blountville) has been invited by President Trump to attend a signing ceremony at the White House for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on Wednesday, Jan 29, 2020. Hill is the only Tennessean and state official expected to be present at this ceremony.
According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, this innovative agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada modernizes the 25-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) by focusing on supporting mutually beneficial trade. It is expected to lead to freer markets, fairer trade, and robust economic growth across North America.
In 2018 alone, Tennessee generated $12.7 billion in exports to both Canada and Mexico. The new USMCA aims to build upon this recent economic momentum by easing restrictions and leveling the playing field for the Tennessee and the U.S. agriculture industries.
“I am pleased President Trump has negotiated an agreement that will lead to better jobs and fairer trade practices for the benefit of our agribusiness industry,” said Chairman Hill. “These businesses are the backbone of our statewide and national economies, and I stand with the President and will continue to fight for our farmers, ranchers, and industry professionals by supporting initiatives that better address their important needs.”
In 2019, Hill sponsored House Joint Resolution 452. This measure acknowledges and praises President Trump’s efforts to negotiate a fair trade agreement with Mexico and Canada through the USMCA because of its extraordinary benefit for American businesses and workers.
