Lawmakers announce major community block grants in Haywood and Lauderdale counties

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  – State Rep. Chris Hurt, R-Halls, Sen. Page Walley, R-Bolivar, and Sen. Ed Jackson, R-Jackson, announced today announced today that three Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) have been awarded in Haywood and Lauderdale counties totaling a combined $1.69 million.

Two of the grants will be used for sewer system improvements with Brownsville receiving $630,000 and Stanton receiving $513,188. Lauderdale County will receive $547,662 for water system improvements.

“These grants will upgrade key infrastructure that residents and businesses depend on every day in our community,” Hurt said. “I am thankful to see these investments being made in Haywood and Lauderdale counties.”

The funds were awarded as part of a $28.5 million grant improvement package announced by Gov. Bill Lee and ECD Commissioner Bob Rolfe to assist communities with infrastructure improvements, housing rehabilitations as well as health and safety initiatives. In all, 62 Tennessee communities were awarded grants through the program.

“This funding will be a significant help in upgrading critical infrastructure in two Haywood County communities,” Walley said. “I’m grateful for the partnership of local officials in getting this done.”

The allocation of CDBG funds is based on priorities set through the public meeting process at the local community level. The CDBG program is funded through HUD and administered in Tennessee by the Department of Economic and Community Development. Funds are available for water and sewer improvements and new extensions, housing rehabilitation and health and safety projects.

“Access to safe drinking water is vital to any community,” Jackson said. “I appreciate the work of local officials and TNECD in securing this essential funding.”
