(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — State Rep. Clay Doggett (R-Pulaski) today announced he fully supports Martin Methodist College’s potential move to join the University of Tennessee system.
According to multiple media reports, the two institutions signed a nonbinding letter of intent on Sept. 11, which opens up the possibility of the UT system acquiring the private liberal arts college, located in Pulaski, Tennessee.
Both Boards of Trustees, as well as the Tennessee General Assembly, and the institutions’ regional accreditors would have to approve the acquisition before it is finalized.
“I am excited about and I fully support Martin Methodist College potentially joining the University of Tennessee System,” said Rep. Doggett. “We have the best state college system in the entire nation, and the addition of Martin Methodist College would not only strengthen the entire system, this move would also enhance the profile of our fine institution, as well as our community.”
Founded in 1870, Martin Methodist College has a current enrollment of about 900 students, most of which are undergraduates. This potential acquisition would be the system’s first new campus since the addition of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1969.
Clay Doggett lives in Pulaski and represents Tennessee House District 70, which includes Giles and part of Lawrence County in the Tennessee General Assembly. He is the Majority Caucus Secretary and Vice-Chair of the House Commerce Committee, as well as a member of the House Judiciary and the Business and Criminal Justice Subcommittees.
