Rep. Ed Butler passes bill expanding Tennessee Promise

State Rep. Ed Butler, R-Rickman, passed legislation expanding when students can use Tennessee Promise scholarships.

House Bill 1803 was unanimously approved in the House on Monday. The bill requires scholarship recipients to be enrolled in an eligible institution no later than the fall term following high school graduation.

“This bill will allow students to use financial aid awards in the summer, which is currently not allowed because of a gap in the law,” Butler said. “Expanding when this money can be used will create more opportunities for Tennessee students to pursue their educational dreams. I’m committed to ensuring students have the resources they need to be successful and this bill is a step in that direction.”

Tennessee Promise provides scholarships to students who attend community and technical colleges in the state.

House Bill 1803 still needs Senate approval and Gov. Bill Lee’s signature.
