Representative Gary Hicks Officially Sworn In; Appointed To Top House Committees
(NASHVILLE) — The House of Representatives officially gaveled into session this week in Nashville, marking the beginning of the 110th General Assembly. As part of the opening day ceremonies, State Representative Gary Hicks (R–Rogersville) took the oath of office and was officially sworn into the Tennessee House of Representatives.
In addition, Representative Hicks was appointed to three of the top committees in the legislature: the House Finance, Ways & Means Committee, the House Finance, Ways & Means Subcommittee, and the House Health Committee.
Much of the activity of the Finance, Ways and Means Committee centers around the preparation of the general appropriations bill and state budget, but any measure which has a fiscal impact of $100,000 or more under the rules of the House is referred to this committee from other standing committees. All measures relating to taxes and revenue are debated within the Finance, Ways & Means Committee.
Legislation referred to the Health Committee is relevant to three major topic areas: public health, mental health, and human services. The committee also considers legislation relating to hospitals and other health and welfare institutions.
This year, legislators are looking to build upon the success of the previous session that saw wasteful government spending cut from the budget, taxes lowered for all Tennesseans, measures passed to encourage job growth, and numerous government reforms.
“Our community sent me here to support policies that will strengthen our economy and produce more job opportunities, ensure our budget remains balanced, and fight government waste. Today, I am proud to continue serving my constituents and doing just that,” said Representative Hicks.
House Speaker Beth Harwell (R–Nashville) added, “The people have placed their trust in us because of dedicated public servants like Representative Hicks whom they know will lead based upon the commonsense, conservative values of our state. I look forward to working with him to accomplish a great deal on behalf of all Tennesseans this year.”
