Rutherford County lawmakers are encouraging local residents to take advantage of Tennessee’s upcoming sales tax holidays, set to begin July 28 with the state’s annual back-to-school tax-free weekend. A three-month-long suspension on grocery sales tax begins Aug. 1.
The General Assembly passed the largest tax cut in Tennessee history this year through legislative efforts led by Rutherford County Republican lawmakers. The delegation includes State Representatives Bryan Terry, Charlie Baum, Tim Rudd, all of Murfreesboro; Mike Sparks and Robert Stevens of Smyrna and State Senators Dawn White and Shane Reeves, also of Murfreesboro.
The Tennessee Works Tax Act provides more than $404 million in savings for families and small businesses. These reforms will lower the tax burden on small businesses, boost Tennessee’s economic competitiveness, encourage entrepreneurship and provide financial relief for families amid rising food costs.
“While the rest of the nation struggles with punishing inflation and tax increases, we are holding the line in Tennessee by returning hard-earned dollars back to our citizens,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement. “Tennessee is a pro-business, pro-family state that has prospered under conservative stewardship. We are committed to keeping taxes low and creating the best possible opportunities for all citizens to prosper.”
The state’s annual back-to-school tax-free weekend, Friday, July 28 through Sunday, July 30 provides an additional $10 million tax cut. Eligible purchases include clothing and shoes valued at $100 or less, school or art supplies costing $100 or less and computers for personal use priced at $1,500 or less.
