(NASHVILLE) – State Senator Rusty Crowe (R-Johnson City) and State Representatives Rebecca Alexander (R-Jonesborough) and Tim Hicks (R-Gray) announced the U.S. Dept of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded Johnson City a $2 million grant to support upgrading the water infrastructure to the Sinking Creek Pump Station. The lawmakers were informed today by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development that the grant has been awarded.
When the $5.8 million project is complete, it is anticipated to have an impact of 216 jobs created, 265 jobs saved, and $5 million in private investment leveraged.
“I am pleased to join Rep. Alexander and Rep. Hicks to announce this important grant for Johnson City,” said Sen. Crowe. “This will have a tremendous impact in improving our water infrastructure to better serve our citizens and invite new economic development. We appreciate all the work our local, state and federal officials did to help secure these funds and were glad to support those efforts.”
The upgrades will assist the city in correcting its infrastructure needs by providing a means to become more economically resilient. Once completed, the project is anticipated to create and retain jobs, advance economic resiliency, and attract private investment to an area.
“This important grant funding is great news for this community,” said Rep. Alexander. “We will now have the resources needed to upgrade this pump station and better prepare for future needs as we look to attract investment.”
“It is important that our infrastructure meets the demands of our growing population,” said Rep. Hicks. “With this much-needed funding, our local leaders will be able to improve our water infrastructure so that it meets these demands and is inviting for new jobs.”
