State Rep. Ed Butler announces truck restriction on State Route 116 in Anderson, Campbell and Morgan Counties

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Ed Butler, R-Rickman, announced the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will be implementing a truck restriction on State Route 116 in Anderson, Campbell and Morgan Counties.

TDOT officials conducted an Operational and Safety Study on State Route 116 and determined that due to sharp, hairpin curves, trucks over 30 feet are unable to safely maintain their lane.  Additionally, the curves created a sight distance issue which lead to safety concerns.

“After a Town Hall meeting earlier this year, and listening to my constituents’ concerns about 18 wheelers on State Route 116, I’m thrilled we have been able to reach a solution that will keep everyone safe on the highway,” Butler said. “I’m very thankful for Region One Director Steve Borden and his team, along with Commissioner Butch Ely and other TDOT leaders who have taken our concerns seriously and worked diligently to get this done.”

State Route 116 is a nearly 42-mile-long narrow, two-lane road that connects drivers from Highway 330 in Morgan County to Rocky Top.

In lieu of the route, there are three identified alternative routes for longer trucks to travel, according to TDOT. Federal law prohibits certain truck restrictions for routes on the National Network, however State Route 116 is not included in this network. The restriction complies with all state and federal requirements.

Traffic signs for the truck restriction are expected to be placed in the coming weeks so drivers are aware of the new change. Tennessee Highway Patrol has been notified and will be enforcing the truck restriction after the signs are installed.

Ed Butler represents District 41 which includes Overton, Morgan, and part of Anderson, Fentress and Roane Counties.
