(NASHVILLE) — State Representative Andrew Farmer (R-Sevierville) today addressed the recent Equifax data breach that jeopardized the personal information of more than 143 million U.S. consumers nationwide — including 3 million Tennessee residents — between May-July of 2017.
Representative Farmer wants the hardworking families of District 17 to know that he is working to ensure that their personal information does not fall into the hands of cybercriminals and others involved in crimes related to identity theft. He is currently in discussions with his Republican colleagues in the House chamber about possible legislation that could strengthen current state and federal laws related to private data and personal information.
Additionally, Farmer encourages residents in Jefferson and Sevier Counties to utilize the complimentary identity theft protection and credit monitoring services that are currently being offered through Equifax to monitor their credit scores and credit reports.
“We live in a day and age where we can never be too safe with our private data and personal information,” said Representative Farmer. “While this particular breach was widespread, I know that Equifax and others are taking the appropriate steps in order to ensure that a similar situation does not occur again and that the residents in our communities, as well as communities across the country, do not become victims of identity theft.”
