Tennessee PTA recognizes legislative leader for student advocacy.
(NASHVILLE) — State Representative Matthew Hill (R-Jonesborough) has been named Outstanding Legislator of the Year by the Tennessee Parent Teacher Association (TNPTA).
The annual award which was presented to Hill during a recent ceremony at Science Hill High School recognizes an outstanding legislator who works to make a positive difference in the education, health, and well-being of Tennessee’s children and youth.
Hill was nominated for the honor by the Johnson City Council of Parent Teacher Associations (JCCPTA). He received it for his strong advocacy on behalf of the students of his district and those across Tennessee.
In recent years, Representative Hill has fought to address the continuous issues plaguing the state’s TNReady testing system. This year, he sponsored passage of a permissive measure that would have made the ACT the only standard for high school teacher and student evaluations. The goal was to provide a more consistent and accurate option for local education agencies to implement in their efforts to effectively track overall academic progress.
“I am honored to be recognized by the TNPTA, the JCCPTA, as well as the parents, educators, and students of our community,” said Representative Hill. “I have always believed that we must support the goals and dreams of our next generation of leaders. That is why I have fought for additional resources for them; when our students and teachers have the tools they need in order to succeed, all of Tennessee benefits.”
“Representative Hill is very deserving of this honor,” said JCCPTA President Paula Treece. “He has sponsored a tremendous amount of legislation that supports the educational endeavors of our children. We are proud of his most recent work as it relates to addressing ongoing TNReady testing issues, and we are lucky to have him serving both our community and our state.”
Matthew Hill serves as a member of the House Finance, Ways, & Means and House Health Committees. Hill is also a member of the House Health and House Rules Subcommittees.
