(NASHVILLE) — Throughout the 2017 legislative session, House Republicans fought to support Tennessee’s military servicemen, women, and veterans. State Representative Ron Gant (R-Rossville) led the way in order to ensure that those who defend our state and our country are not forgotten.
In 2017, Gant and additional members of the House Republican Caucus fought to safeguard veterans from being used as political pawns during a debate over whether to include veteran’s property tax relief as part of the IMPROVE Act. The group eventually was able to reduce the amount of property tax owed by veterans, eligible low-income elderly and disabled homeowners.
Additionally, Representative Gant backed the Support, Training and Renewing Opportunity for National Guardsman (STRONG) Act. This initiative provides last dollar-scholarships to our state’s service members who meet eligibility requirements, allowing them to pursue their educational goals and dreams without fear of financial struggle.
Gant also cosponsored House Bill 433; this initiative assists veterans by determining how their military training can count as college credit at Tennessee’s colleges and universities. The legislation also grants in-state tuition to anyone currently living in Tennessee who is using VA educational benefits, regardless of their official home of record.
“Our efforts in 2017 are a small way that we can express our gratitude and show our appreciation to the brave men and women who protect our freedom, our state, and our country,” said Representative Gant. “These courageous individuals and their families deserve our support and respect for the selfless sacrifices they make. I pledge to continue to fight for them and protect the rights of our veterans, active duty military members, and their families throughout my time serving as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly.”
Ron Gant serves as Assistant Majority Floor Leader. He is also a member of the House Health Committee and the House Calendar and Rules Committee, as well as the House Insurance & Banking Sub and Full Committees. Gant lives in Rossville and represents House District 94, which includes Fayette, McNairy, and part of Hardeman County. He can be reached by email at [email protected] or by calling (615) 741-6890.
