NASHVILLE, Tenn. – State Rep. Lowell Russell, R-Vonore, and Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, announced today that Monroe County will receive a $630,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (ECD) to extend water lines.
“Having access to safe drinking water is vital to the health and well being of any community,” Russell said. “I am grateful to our state and local officials for their support of this project and investment in Monroe County.”
The funds were awarded as part of a $28.5 million grant improvement package announced by Gov. Bill Lee and ECD Commissioner Bob Rolfe to assist communities with infrastructure improvements, housing rehabilitations as well as health and safety initiatives. In all, 62 Tennessee communities were awarded grants through the program.
“This funding will go a long way toward improving critical infrastructure in Monroe County,” Bell said. “I’m grateful to the local officials for their partnership in making this happen.”
The allocation of CDBG funds is based on priorities set through the public meeting process at the local community level. The CDBG program is funded through HUD and administered in Tennessee by the Department of Economic and Community Development. Funds are available for water and sewer improvements and new extensions, housing rehabilitation and health and safety projects.
