State Rep. Bryan Terry encourages residents to take advantage of upcoming sales tax holidays

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — State Rep. Bryan Terry, MD, R-Murfreesboro, is encouraging residents to take advantage of Tennessee’s current and upcoming sales tax holidays.

The state’s annual back-to-school tax-free weekend will take place Friday, Jul 29 through Sunday, July 31. Eligible purchases include clothing valued at $100 or less, school or art supplies costing $100 or less and computers for personal use that are priced at $1,500 or less.

A month-long sales tax holiday on groceries will also take place in August. The move is intended to provide relief to residents amid record-high inflation and rising food costs.

“In Tennessee, we run conservative budgets, but sometimes the revenues exceed the projection,” Terry said. “As such, we have been able to make some significant tax cuts while providing some tax holidays. While the tax holidays and cuts aren’t as expansive as I had hoped, it is a great opportunity for Tennesseans and provides us with some data for further tax cuts.”

State lawmakers also approved legislation earlier this year that extends an existing sales tax holiday on purchases of gun safes and gun locking devices through June 30, 2023.

Since 2011, the General Assembly has cut more than $2 billion in taxes statewide.

“It looks like we will have another surplus when we go back into session in January,” Terry said. “However, with inflation and a Biden economy that is recessionary, we will need to continue to take conservative approaches to our budgeting.”
